The daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, Irene was born in 1897. She received her Doctor of Science in 1925. Along with her husband, Frederic, they were the first to produce artificial radioactivity by bombarding various elements with alpha particles. This discovery won them the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
This work led Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman to conduct experiments providing nuclear fission.
